Nigeria failed to qualify for the last tournament after a painful playoff defeat to Ghana, a disappointment that still lingers in the minds of players and fans alike, with Osimhen missing out on some of the qualifying matches due to injury. With crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe approaching, Osimhen has stressed the urgency of securing a spot in the tournament. "It's a dream for every footballer to play at the World Cup, and given our situation in the group, I am desperate - like my teammates - to qualify for the 2026 tournament," Osimhen told BBC Sport Africa. "We suffered a huge disappointment in 2022, and we simply can't let it happen again - not to us, not to the country, and not to our generation." The Napoli striker also emphasized how important it is for him to play in football's biggest international tournament. "You don't want to finish your career with the regret of never playing at a World Cup. That is not what I want for myself." Nigeria's qualification campaign got off to a poor start, and the team is now under new leadership with Eric Chelle replacing Augustine Eguavoen as head coach. The Super Eagles are winless in Group C, having drawn three of their first four matches and lost one, leaving them in fifth place with just three points. Osimhen remains hopeful that under the new manager, the team can correct past mistakes and turn their fortunes around. "There's a new manager now, and we are desperately looking forward to the game against Rwanda. We must correct the mistakes we've made and put ourselves in a better position to qualify," he added. Nigeria will face Rwanda in Kigali on 21 March, before hosting Zimbabwe four days later in a must-win encounter.
