Croatia contained the attacking duo of Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé in a 2-0 victory over France in the first leg of the Nations League quarterfinals Thursday.
Italy, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Croatia, France, Spain and the Netherlands are vying for places in the last four Italy impressed in their Nations League group, winning four of their first five games – including a 3-1 victory against France in Paris – but they had to settle for second place after losing the return fixture to France in Milan in November. Luciano Spalletti’s side missed out on top spot on goal difference and the quarter-final draw has not been kind to them. Their record against Germany is not good – they’ve failed to beat them in their last six attempts. The last time the teams met, in 2022, Germany ran out convincing 5-2 winners. Continue reading...
Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch withdraws from the Netherlands squad for their two-legged Nations League quarter-final against Spain.
Forget the days of Wenger and Houllier – there is a worrying lack of French coaches in Europe’s elite leagues these days Where have all the coaches gone? French sports media address the theme on a regular basis and with good reason: the country’s football managers are no longer wanted abroad. The days when Arsène Wenger and Gérard Houllier opened the door for Jean Tigana, Rémi Garde, Claude Puel and others to coach in England are long gone. In the 2000s and 2010s, French managers could also find work in La Liga and Serie A, as Philippe Montanier did at Real Sociedad and Rudi Garcia at Roma and Napoli – leaving aside Zinedine Zidane and Didier Deschamps, who could not be really considered expatriates at Real Madrid and Juventus. This is no longer the case and takes particular significance now that Deschamps, whose France side face Croatia in a Nations League quarter-final on Thursday and Sunday, has entered the final straight of his 14-year association with Les Bleus and confirmed he will leave his position at the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. Who could succeed him? Continue reading...
Manchester City playmaker’s patchy international form is a source of frustration. Now is the time to step up Phil Foden remains England’s enigma. The Manchester City attacker has often been inspired for his club and insipid for his country. He was the best offensive player in the Premier League last season, scoring 27 goals in all competitions, but he flattered to deceive during England’s baffling run to the final of Euro 2024. A solitary dazzling performance in the semi-final victory over the Netherlands merely heightened the frustration. Playing as an inside-forward in Gareth Southgate’s rejigged 3-4-2-1 system, Foden was at his bewitching best in that game. He drifted into pockets and ran at defenders, teasing them with his close control and sharp one-twos. He hit the woodwork with a wondrous shot from long range. He burrowed into the area, all quick feet and low centre of gravity, and had an effort hacked off the line. He was involved during one of England’s best moves during the second half, slipping a clever pass into Kyle Walker, who was marginally offside when he crossed for Bukayo Saka to sidefoot past Bart Verbruggen from close range. Barcelona fought back from 2-0 down to top La LigaLewandowski and Lamine Yamal also on target in victory Barcelona’s Ferran Torres scored twice to help secure a late 4-2 comeback win over La Liga title rivals Atlético Madrid in a pulsating clash on Sunday that took the Catalans back to the top of the table. The hosts took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Julián Alvarez after Antoine Griezmann broke quickly and found Giuliano Simeone, who curled a precise pass for the former Manchester City forward to score his 11th league goal of the season. France swept to the Six Nations title with a record-strewn 35-16 victory over Scotland on Saturday. The win put Les Bleus one point above England, whose 68-14 rout of Wales had sent the championship battle down to the wire.
Like their rivals, the problem is not the rise in revenue that a new home offers but that so little of it ends up being spent on players Build it and they will come – but you should be aware that you will be left with significant debt repayments, an element of the story to which Kevin Costner took a characteristically cavalier attitude. Which may be why Field of Dreams was about building a baseball stadium in Iowa for Shoeless Joe Jackson and the ghosts of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox rather than, say, Daniel Levy constructing a football stadium in Haringey for Vincent Janssen and the remnants of the 2019 Tottenham Hotspur team. In the past week, Manchester United have revealed plans for a new £2bn stadium, capacity 100,000, next to Old Trafford, while Newcastle are reported to be looking to move from St James’ Park to a 65,000-capacity stadium on Leazes Park. Everton will move into a new stadium at Bramley-Moore dock next season. Wrexham are building a 5,500-capacity Kop. New stadiums suddenly are fashionable again after a period in which they came to seem almost an afterthought. That, perhaps, is an unintended consequence of profitability and sustainability rules (PSR). Continue reading...
Milan enjoy thrilling 2-1 comeback against ComoBayern held to a 1-1 draw away to Union Berlin Kylian Mbappé scored twice to help Real Madrid fight back to beat Villarreal 2-1 and move top of La Liga overnight. Real Madrid levelled 10 minutes later when Mbappé pounced on Brahim Díaz’s blocked shot and the ball landed at his feet for a close-range finish. Continue reading...

Maddison was instrumental in the move that created Wilson Odobert’s winning goal, having earlier scored his 11th of the season to make it 2-0. Continue reading...
