Manager Eddie Howe tells Newcastle fans "the dream is not over, it's just going to take a lot, lot longer".
‘We haven’t had the window we wanted,’ manager saysHowe says he is ‘happy’ despite more ‘hands-off’ role Eddie Howe has told Newcastle fans the dream of a trophy-laden future has not necessarily died but warned it is going to take “a lot, lot, longer” to fulfil. He admitted he did not know whether he would be the manager in the 10 years or so now needed to lift the club to the highest echelons. After a month-long pursuit of a £65m deal for Crystal Palace’s England defender Marc Guéhi ended in disappointment, Howe was left with only two outfield signings. It is fair to say the arrival Lloyd Kelly, a free defensive recruit from Bournemouth, and William Osula, a £10m forward from Sheffield United regarded as one for the future, has underwhelmed supporters. The Brazilian goalkeeper is due to have a medical on Friday after an agreement was struck with Bournemouth for a straight loan with no option or obligation to buy, with Neto set to provide cover for David Raya following the expected departure of Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton. Leicester have completed the signing of Atalanta defender Caleb Okoli for about €15m (£12.7m). The 22-year-old, who has represented Italy at Under-21 level, spent last season on loan in Serie A at Frosinone. Okoli, who has agreed a five-year contract, is Leicester’s third summer signing after the arrival of the 18-year-old midfielder Michael Golding from Chelsea for about £5m and the former Fulham forward Bobby Decordova-Reid on a free transfer. Sean Dyche stays positive, Erik ten Hag is under familiar pressure and Ipswich have a chance for points Another goal from super-sub Leandro Trossard sparked Arsenal’s successful revenge mission against Aston Villa last week, with the Belgian forward now having scored six off the bench since joining from Brighton in January 2023. The question now is whether Mikel Arteta is tempted to throw him in from the start against his former club when they meet on Saturday. Trossard has made only 28 Premier League starts for Arsenal – the same number of times he has been introduced as a substitute – and has managed 14 goals, with Gabriel Martinelli starting both league games on the left side of his attack so far this season. “I know the competition in the team and it pushes everyone to go onto the next level and I’m very happy to have an impact and help the team,” Trossard said after the Villa game last week. After two stinging defeats in the Premier League, zero goals scored and seven shipped in a debilitating start to the season, Everton’s mission was clear: dispatch Doncaster Rovers from the Carabao Cup, chalk up a first win, and prepare for Bournemouth’s visit on Saturday in far better heart. They achieved this, in a scrappy performance riven with tension until Iliman Ndiaye danced through the Rovers rearguard and pinged a cute finish in off Ian Lawlor’s right post to make it 2-0 on 74 minutes. Victory was confirmed by Beto’s late strike, and was reward for Sean Dyche for fielding a strong XI including Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane and Dwight McNeil. Continue reading...
AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola says the referee should have had the chance to review video footage after Dango Ouattara's effort was ruled out by VAR during their 1-1 draw with Newcastle at the Vitality Stadium.
Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe says their 1-1 draw with AFC Bournemouth seems "fair" but is "frustrated" they failed to get another goal.
It’s a long way to come for nothing and, after a match in which his team were outplayed for long periods, Eddie Howe can take solace in a hard-fought point. Newcastle looked set to taste their first defeat of the season at their manager’s former club after Marcus Tavernier’s first-half strike but, after a late rally, Anthony Gordon hit back to rescue a 1-1 draw. As well as being the most gruelling away day in the Premier League – a 700-mile round trip for the Newcastle fans winding their way south by coach and car – this always looked like a difficult test for Howe’s side. Newcastle took a single point against Bournemouth last season, slipping to a 2-0 defeat at the Vitality Stadium in November just as their hosts started to click under Andoni Iraola.
